What is digital transformation?

According to Wikipedia, digital transformation is the adoption of digital technology to transform services or businesses, through replacing non-digital or manual processes with digital processes or replacing older digital technology with newer digital technology.

In the past, digital transformation was viewed by executives as a way of getting ahead of the competition. Today, digitisation is seen as a necessity, a way of future-proofing the organisation. Indeed, PwC found that although 52% of companies plan to cut or defer investments because of COVID-19, only 9% will make those cuts in digital transformation.

The term itself is quite broad and encompasses a wide variety of technologies (cloud computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robotic process automation, and more), and industry sectors like retail and banking. Additionally, in “The Nine Elements of Digital Transformation”, Westerman, Bonnet, and McAfee identified three key areas where executives are digitally transforming their enterprises. Rolling out digital transformation initiatives

There is no doubt that organisations in all sectors are embarking on a path to digital transformation and the Covid-19 pandemic is likely to accelerate this trend over the next few years. In fact, according to McKinsey, the pandemic has seen companies accelerate the digitisation of their internal operations by three to four years.

But…

In the context of BPM, trying to implement full enterprise digital transformation too fast is fraught with danger. Often, it is hard to implement as there are competing requirements (and personalities!) and the project quickly becomes muddled. Implementing digital transformation solutions too fast might indicate limited (or no) user acceptance testing (UAT). The knock-on effect of limited UAT is the possibility users will fail to adopt the new technology as part of their normal working behaviour.

The answer to these challenges is to introduce BPM software incrementally to smaller, departmental processes. The result is a quick win and reduced risk, allowing for a more agile approach during the early stages of adoption.
